EFT for Couples

EFT Couples (EFT-C) is a research based and experiential approach designed to restructure and repair emotional bonds and restore safety, closeness and authenticity in intimate relationships.

Relationship distress often develops through repeating cycles of misunderstanding, invalidation and emotional disconnection. One partner may pursue or criticize out of fear of losing connection. The other may withdraw or become defensive out of shame or fear of not being enough. Over time, these patterns create distance and hurt.

Understanding the Emotional Cycle

Beneath conflict there are often vulnerable emotions such as loneliness, fear of rejection, sadness, shame, or longing for closeness or validation. In therapy, these cycles are slowed down and explored with care. The goal is not to assign blame, but to understand what is happening emotionally underneath.

When partners express vulnerable feelings and unmet needs in a structured and supported way, new experiences of empathy and responsiveness can emerge. Emotional injuries can gradually be repaired.

Working With Identity and Emotional Regulation

An important aspect of this model includes individual emotional work within the couples process. Therapy may focus on identity wounds, self-criticism, or unresolved shame that shapes reactions or misunderstandings in the relationship.

Self and other soothing are central. While emotional support from a partner is vital, it is equally important to develop the ability to calm oneself during distress. When partners are less overwhelmed, they are better able to remain present and emotionally engaged.

Healthy intimacy involves both closeness and validation. EFT Couples supports partners to maintain a clear sense of self while deepening emotional connection.

The aim is to create a relationship where both partners feel emotionally secure, respected, and deeply connected while remaining their authentic selves.
