EFT for Families
Emotion Focused Therapy for Families (EFT-F) supports families when a child or adolescent is struggling emotionally or behaviourally. Grounded in research on emotion and attachment, this approach recognizes that emotional relationships within the family are central to both distress and healing.
Children develop within the context of close relationships. When emotional needs are understood and responded to with sensitivity, they develop greater resilience, emotional regulation, and confidence. When relationships become marked by misunderstanding, conflict, or emotional disconnection, difficulties may emerge for both the child and the family.
EFT Family helps strengthen emotional bonds, restore a sense of safety, and support parents in responding to their child's emotional needs with greater confidence and clarity.
When a Child Struggles, the Whole Family Is Affected
When a child is experiencing emotional or behavioural difficulties, the effects are rarely limited to the child alone. Parents often feel worried, overwhelmed, frustrated, or uncertain about how best to help. At the same time, children may struggle to understand or regulate intense emotions, leading to anxiety, withdrawal, anger, or challenging behaviours.
Rather than viewing these difficulties as isolated problems within the child, EFT Family understands them within the context of family relationships. Emotional reactions between parents and children naturally influence one another, sometimes creating patterns of misunderstanding and escalating distress.
Therapy helps families recognise these interactional patterns, strengthen emotional understanding, and develop new ways of responding that foster security, connection, and resilience.
Supporting Parents and Caregivers
Parents and caregivers are the most important resource in a child's emotional development. A central aim of EFT Family is therefore to strengthen parents' confidence and emotional competence so they can respond to their child's needs with greater steadiness and effectiveness.
Parents learn how to recognise and validate their child's emotional experience in ways that help the child feel understood and accepted. They develop skills for responding to emotional crises with calmness rather than reactivity, while maintaining clear and appropriate boundaries.
Repairing moments of disconnection is another important aspect of the work. When misunderstandings or conflicts occur, parents learn how to acknowledge their child's experience, offer meaningful apologies when appropriate, and rebuild trust without compromising their parental role.
Therapy also helps parents recognise recurring emotional cycles, sometimes referred to as feeling traps or blocks. These patterns arise when a child's distress triggers strong emotional reactions in the parent, which in turn intensify the child's emotional response. By understanding these cycles, parents become better able to step out of reactive interactions and respond with greater emotional presence.
Throughout the process, compassion is cultivated both for the child and for the parents themselves. As parents become more emotionally regulated and self-compassionate, they are better able to provide the emotional safety their child needs.
Working Through Parental Emotional Blocks
Supporting a child through emotional difficulties can activate powerful feelings in parents, including fear, guilt, shame, helplessness, or self-doubt. These emotional reactions are understandable, yet they can sometimes make it difficult to remain calm and emotionally available.
EFT Family recognises that parents also need support. Through experiential methods, including chair work when appropriate, therapy helps parents process emotional blocks that interfere with their ability to respond in the ways they would like.
As parents become more emotionally grounded and secure, they are increasingly able to remain present during challenging moments. This emotional stability strengthens the parent–child relationship and creates a safer environment in which children can regulate, recover, and grow.
Formats of Support
EFT Family is offered in several formats to meet the differing needs of families.
Support may be provided through individual parent counselling, sessions for parent couples, family therapy, parent groups, or structured educational programmes. A two-day parent workshop is also available, offering intensive training in the core emotional skills that support healthier family relationships.
Across all formats, practical skill development is integrated with experiential learning and emotional processing, enabling parents to apply new understanding within everyday family life.
EFST and EFFT
Within this framework, two closely related approaches are included.
Emotion Focused Skills Training (EFST) focuses on strengthening parents' emotional competence. Parents learn how to validate emotions, respond during emotional crises, set clear and caring boundaries while maintaining connection, repair relational ruptures through apology and empathy, and support their child's emotional development. They are also helped to recognise and work through their own emotional reactions, called feeling traps, enabling them to respond with greater emotional presence and confidence. EFST is based on the understanding that parents can become powerful agents of change when they feel emotionally equipped and supported. The chair-work is a central technique.
Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) is a family-based approach that supports caregivers in becoming active agents of change in their child's recovery. Based on the understanding that parents can become the primary agents of change in their child's recovery, EFST helps caregivers respond to emotions with greater presence, compassion, and confidence. Parents learn practical skills for validating emotions, responding during emotional crises, setting clear boundaries, and repairing relational ruptures. They are also supported in working through their own emotional blocks, enabling them to provide more consistent and effective emotional support for their child. Depending on the needs of the family, therapy may also include direct work with children, adolescents, and caregivers together. This can involve helping family members express vulnerable feelings, repair relational injuries, deepen emotional understanding, and strengthen attachment bonds within the family.
The Overall Aim
The overall aim of EFT Family is to strengthen the family's capacity to navigate emotional challenges together.
As parents become more confident in responding to emotions with empathy, clarity, and emotional presence, children experience greater safety, understanding, and support. In turn, families develop more secure relationships, improved emotional regulation, and greater resilience in the face of life's challenges.
Rather than focusing solely on reducing symptoms, EFT Family seeks to create lasting emotional change by strengthening the relationships that support healthy development throughout childhood and adolescence.
