EFT for Youth

Emotion Focused Therapy for Youth (EFT-Y) supports adolescents and young adults who are experiencing emotional, relational, or psychological difficulties. Grounded in research on emotion and attachment, this approach helps young people better understand their emotional experiences, strengthen their sense of self, and develop more secure relationships with the people who matter most.

Adolescence is a period of significant emotional, social, and neurological development. As young people move toward greater independence, they face new challenges related to identity, belonging, relationships, school, and family life. When emotional difficulties arise, therapy offers a safe and supportive space to explore these experiences and develop healthier ways of responding to them.

When a Young Person Struggles

Young people may struggle with anxiety, depression, self-criticism, shame, loneliness, emotional overwhelm, anger, or difficulties in relationships. Some withdraw from others, while others become caught in recurring conflict or find it difficult to express what they are feeling and needing.

Rather than viewing these experiences simply as symptoms to be managed, EFT Youth understands emotions as meaningful sources of information. Emotional difficulties often reflect unmet needs, painful experiences, or patterns that once served a protective function but no longer support healthy development.

Therapy helps young people make sense of these experiences, creating opportunities for greater emotional awareness, self-understanding, and lasting change.

Working with Emotions and Relationships

EFT Youth works directly with emotional experience in a structured and supportive way. Rather than talking about emotions from a distance, therapy helps young people access, explore, and transform their emotional experiences as they unfold in the present moment.

As therapy progresses, young people develop a greater ability to recognise and regulate emotions, understand their meaning, and express them in ways that strengthen rather than disrupt relationships. They are supported in developing self-compassion, resilience, and a stronger sense of identity.

Experiential methods, including chair work when appropriate, may be used to help process unresolved emotions, reduce self-criticism, and foster new emotional experiences that promote healing and personal growth.

The Role of Parents and Caregivers

Although the primary focus is on the young person's emotional development, parents and caregivers often play an important role in the therapeutic process. Because adolescents continue to develop within close relationships, strengthening emotional communication within the family can significantly enhance therapeutic change.

Parents are supported in understanding the emotions that underlie their child's reactions and behaviours, enabling them to respond with greater empathy, emotional presence, and confidence. Joint sessions may provide opportunities for adolescents and parents to communicate difficult feelings, repair misunderstandings, and strengthen trust within the relationship.

When families develop a deeper understanding of one another's emotional experiences, they become better equipped to navigate challenges together.

EFT Youth and EFST Youth

Within this framework, two closely related approaches may be used, depending on the needs of the young person and the family.

Emotion Focused Therapy for Youth (EFT Youth) is an experiential psychotherapy approach that works directly with the emotional experiences of adolescents and young adults. Through emotionally focused conversations and experiential interventions, young people are supported in accessing, understanding, and transforming difficult emotions. The goal is to promote lasting emotional change while strengthening both self-understanding and close relationships. A distinctive feature of EFT Youth is the inclusion of joint parent–adolescent sessions, where the therapist helps young people and their caregivers communicate about emotions, attachment and identity needs, and relational challenges in ways that foster greater understanding and connection.

Emotion Focused Skills Training for Youth (EFST Youth) focuses on strengthening emotional understanding and practical emotional skills for young people, caregivers, and professionals. Through guided conversations and structured interventions, EFST Youth helps clarify emotional processes, identify relational and environmental risk factors, strengthen emotional communication, and support clear, compassionate boundaries when needed. The approach can be used in outpatient and inpatient settings, residential care, schools, and in the home to support effective responses during emotionally challenging situations.

Formats of Support

EFT Youth may be offered as individual therapy, family therapy, joint sessions with adolescents and caregivers, group programmes, or structured skills training.

The format is tailored to the needs of the young person, the family, and the goals of the therapeutic work, integrating emotional processing with practical strategies that support change in everyday life.

The Overall Aim

The overall aim of EFT Youth is to help young people feel more secure in themselves and more connected to the important people in their lives.

As adolescents develop a deeper understanding of their emotions and greater confidence in expressing them, they become better able to navigate life's challenges with resilience and authenticity. When families also learn to respond with empathy, openness, and emotional presence, relationships become a source of security and support for continued growth and development.
